Lumson scoops award for sustainable packaging innovation

The awards, organised by the publishing house Le Fonti with the sponsorship of the European Commission, aim to identify and select excellence in the professional, financial and industrial sectors of in Italy.

Matteo Moretti, CEO of Lumson, explained that the awards recognise the company’s efforts this year in the areas of innovation and quality when it comes to responding to the demand for sustainable cosmetics and personal care packaging.

“Lumson has been recognized as an exemplary example of Italian excellence since 1975 and a European leader in the design, development, production and decoration of packaging systems for cosmetics and cosmeceuticals,” ​he says.

“We are also recognized for having been able to focus on innovation and quality without forgetting the themes of sustainability, from the development of eco-design products to the monitoring of the supply chain." ​

Why sustainable packaging?​

With consumer interest in and demand for sustainability now reaching throughout the supply chain in the beauty industry, sustainable packaging has become a central hot topic.

Indeed, ‘sea change’ was one of the top four consumer trend predictions for Europe from market research provider Mintel for 2018.

“Mintel expects that more and more brands will offer education and leadership with clean, safe and sustainable products that distinguish them from the competition,” ​the firm explains​.​

“Sustainability and the environment are high on consumer’s agenda, as Mintel research finds that in the UK, 72% of consumers would be interested in buying products with packaging made wholly/partially from recycled plastic.”​

Study: biodegradable plastics essential​

According to new research from several European bodies, biodegradable plastics offer innovative solutions to improve recycling quality by facilitating the means for more efficient separate waste collection.

Efforts in sustainability when it comes to packaging need to be cross-industry for consumer goods, the study suggests.

It confirms that mandatory collection of recyclable waste throughout Europe is necessary in order to improve the quality and quantity of plastics recycling.
